P‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌rovide a synopsis of the 7 readings, videos or assessments listed below. For each (1-7) provide a synopsis in your own words. Minimum word count for each (1-7) is 75 words, but be specific and cover each for up to 2 points for each item.

1. This short reading and 6-minute video are set close to home off the coast of CT in Long Island Sound. It is also an example of businesses partnering with universities (in this case Yale and UConn). You’ll learn about the development of vertical ocean farming.
Greenwave: Read the short story and watch the 6 minute video near the end of the story at: https://www.patagonia.com/stories/greenwave/story-30925.html

2. You may have purchased Fair Trade coffee or chocolates, but Patagonia is championing Fair Trade practices for the apparel industry. As you likely have figured out, the apparel and fashion industry is a dirty industry that has been the ongoing subject of social welfare abuses (e.g., child labor and unsafe and unfair labor practices) and high energy and fossil fuel dependence (e.g., petrochemicals, fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide intensive practices). The following video looks at first steps toward fairly traded practices in other industries.

3. Why Recycle? is the question asked in this video. Why is it so important? Recycling: https://www.patagonia.com/why-recycled/ (For this video, also comment on how this relates to the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) framework you studied last week.)

4. Take a cursory look through an internet search at issues with plastics, particularly as to how much and where it accumulates. Then, watch this video from Patagonia that demonstrates one, small effort made to deal with the plastic fish nets that have found the ocean as a grave and have caused horrific damage to wildlife and ecosystems.

5. What’‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌s your eco-impact or ecological footprint? Take the following assessment to determine how many earths we would need if everyone lived as we do. What does the “calculator” attempt to teach? Go to:

6. We have a lot of budding entrepreneurs here at Western. Have you considered the 3 billion people who need greater services and products from businesses who don’t have access to what we take for granted? View the Ted Talk by Paul Polak, a social entrepreneur whose businesses have helped millions. Unfortunately, Dr. Polak has died and he gave this talk some time ago, but he left a great legacy that has been globally recognized. This video, “The Future Corporation” will describe his work and the kind of opportunities that remain today (note: In the management literature, this work is part of a subfield frequently described as “The Base of the Pyramid” ).

7. “Unbroken Ground” (video link below) explains the critical role food will play in the next frontier of our efforts to solve the environmental crisis. It explores four areas of agriculture that aim to change our relationship to the land and oceans. Most of our food is produced using methods that reduce biodiversity, decimate soil and contribute to climate change. We believe our food can and should be a part of the solution to the environmental crisis – grown, harvested and produced in ways that restore our land, water and wildlife. The film tells the story of four groups that are pioneers in the fields of regenerative agriculture, regenerative grazing, diversified crop development and restorative fishing.
Describe each example given and how each works to regenerative and restorative processes.
